Install Ubuntu within VMWare
How to Install Linux Mint in VMware
Lecture Overview
- In this lecture I demonstrate how to go about how to create a virtual machine (consider this a 'virtual' physical computer), and install Linux Mint within the 'VM.'
- We will use the Linux Mint for the course. We will NOT use the graphical interface (for the most part), only the terminal/console/shell as most servers do not automatically install a GUI.
- If you already have a previous version of Mint or Ubuntu you use that's fine. It doesn't matter, they work exactly the same from the terminal standpoint.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNOADING VMWARE and Linux Mint
- You should receive an email in your FalconMail from E-Academy. DO NOT DELETE THIS EMAIL. It has instructions on how to download VMWare Workstation.
OR
- If you do not receive an email, or accidently delete the email, follow these instructions:
- Copy and paste the following web address into your web browser:
http://e5.onthehub.com/WebStore/ProductsByMajorVersionList.aspx?ws=1732c3ab-1daa-df11-ad57-0030487d8897&vsro=8&JSEnabled=1 v
Click the 'Sign in" link in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
- In the username field type in YOUR complete falconmail address. For example:
john_smith@falconmail.daytonastate.edu
- Click the "Forgot Password" button. This will send an email to your Falconmail account that describes how to reset your password.
- Follow the instructions in the email.
- Log back into the WMWare academic site using your username and new password.
- Download VMWare Workstation 8. Remember where you downloaded the file!
- You should receive an email in your Falconmail with an authorization code (serial number) that you will cut and paste into the appropriate field during the installation process.
- Find the installation file and double click it to begin the installation process. When asked for the authorization code, copy & paste the code from your Falcomail email into the appropriate textbox (or type it, careful not to make mistakes).
- STORE YOUR AUTHORIZATION CODE IN A SAFE PLACE, IF YOU NEED TO INSTALL AGAIN YOU WILL NEED THAT INFORMATION (e.g., DO NOT delete the email, so you will always have access to the code).
- You should now have a fully functioning version of VMWare Workstation! I will create and post a video that demonstrates how to install Linux within a virtual machine. Or you can try it yourself, it’s not rocket science.
- Note that you can only download EACH available product only once from this site. So please make sure you save this installation file!
To download Linux Mint go to:
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
Select the 'No CODECS' version and the appropriate architecture (note that 32-bit will run on both 32- and 64-bit architecture machines).
Then view the video on "How to install Linux Mint" that demonstrates how to install your Linux MINT ISO in VMWare.
